Adaptive skiing to enhance recovery

marcel laponder

The Armed Forces Para Snow Sports Team (AFPST) is a charitable organisation, run entirely by military and ex-military volunteers, which uses adaptive skiing to enhance the recovery of Wounded, Injured and Sick (WIS) personnel – both serving and veteran. It reintroduces the spirit of challenge and competition that they were accustomed to as part of normal Service life. At its heart, is a performance ethos, which provides a competitive winter sports focus for disabled athletes to complement the numerous adaptive summer sports offered by the Battle Back programme.

“CSDST has given me a new lease on life whilst dealing with an auto immune disease. Skiing not only frees me from my disability, giving me the freedom of using my legs in a normal way (without the use of walking sticks or a wheelchair) but by keeping me physically active, I believe skiing has kept my illness at a manageable level.…” – GRANT HARVEY

The AFPST improves the confidence, resilience and skill of every disabled skier through individual investment and high-quality coaching. This process encourages the raw talent of near beginners, introducing those who show promise to the world of ski racing, and provides high-level performance coaching up to International level for the most advanced skiers.

AFPST has helped dozens of wounded servicemen and women over the years to discover new skills, find passion in a new sport and engage with an activity that catalyses their recovery.  The Endeavour Fund is pleased to be able to support AFPST in a period of growth that will give opportunities to more personnel, injured in service, to draw inspiration and follow the example of Mick Brennan.  Mick lost both legs in an IED Strike in Iraq 2004. AFPST helped Mick to move on from his injuries and helped him to discover a talent for skiing that recently led him to represent Great Britain at the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi.
